Relic Run Mechanics
I read several misleading (if not false) explanations of this, so i thought i would post in a bit more detail exactly how this map works.
The mechanics are actually quite simple; If you cap 3 times in a row you win. If you cap *more times* than your opponent, you win. Here is where the tricky part comes in. If there is a tie, then the last to cap wins. Only if there is a tie however, it is NOT always the last to cap wins. Here are some examples:
Team A caps 2 consecutive relics. Team B then has a comeback and beats Team A, and caps 1 relic. In this scenario, Team A still wins, they had 2 relics and Team B had 1 relic, regardless of who captured last Team A still wins.
If, however, Team A captures 1 relic, then Team B captures a relic, (so there is a tie), then Team A captures the last relic, they win.
Finally, if Team A captures 2 consecutive relics, then Team B captures 2 consecutive relics, Team B wins (2-2, but B captured last).
i hope this lifts some of the confusion surrounding this.

That is correct, if neither team caps, both teams lose. The same thing happens when an Edge bomb goes off killing both teams simultaneously, or on an altar map when 10 minutes goes by with no team ever capping the altar. However, one addition the original post - it's not just three in a row that will end it early. It's win by three (hrm.. I could be wrong on this, but I'm 99.9% sure I'm right). Therefore, if team A caps twice, then team B caps once (score now 2-1 in A's favor), A only needs two more consecutive caps (not three) to win it 4-1. Am I right?

Capping last is a common misconception.
It is actually the team that caps first will always lose in a tie, regardless of who caps last. Test it if you want to see.

Relic maps use a Tug of War style mechanic. 3 caps and you win assumes you cap without interruption. The actual score looks like this:
win <- A-A-A <flag> B-B-B -> win
So the reason why the team that caps first can lose is because the game is not based on total score, but based on who has the flag closer to their win condition.

This is correct. The model suggested by Four Pool Rush is a great way to understand this:
Quote:
win <- A-A-A <flag> B-B-B -> win
|
The battle starts in a neutral position (if neither caps during the entire 10 minutes, both teams lose as stated above). If you imagine a little marker from a monopoly game, each capture would 'push' this marker towards the corresponding side by one 'step'. The thing to understand here is that once someone makes a capture, there is no neutral position.
If you are ever confused in a game as to which side is leading, just press the ~ key, disable team chat (mostly to avoid all of the people spamming their called target, or scroll up) and you should see a message by the ghostly indicating if you are winning or not.

yep, you've got to think of it as a win condition scenario.
So if it's 1-1, the team capping 2nd will win because they are in fact closer to the win condition.
You often seen teams waiting for the other team to cap first before they cap it because of this
